August 18th, 2021 – Denton Animal Services contacted AIR to respond to a case of animals confiscated during a routine traffic stop. Denton Animal Services requested our care team to assist with daily care.
57 roosters were confiscated at the traffic stop. The birds had crossed state lines without proper health certifications. Our responders immediately acted to provide care.
AIR Responders facilitated routine blood tests, applicable vaccination and veterinary care to all 57 roosters.
Given the circumstances of the case, the Texas Animal Health Commission required testing for these birds that crossed into Texas. TAHC requested the assistance of our Team to assist with the handling of the birds for their required testing.
Unfortunately, the birds tested positive for ILT, Infectious laryngotracheitis (ILT) is a highly contagious upper respiratory tract disease of chicken caused by Gallid herpesvirus 1 (GaHV-1). Due to the highly infectious nature of ILT, the roosters were humanely euthanized.
