Animal Shelter Resources

Across the country, states are facing animal shelter crises due to the countless number of stray and abandoned animals, limited resources for shelters, natural disasters, and a lack of spaying and neutering programs. Texas has struggled with this the most alongside California.

Many animal welfare organizations, nonprofits, and shelters across the country are working to address this crisis by promoting volunteer work, adoption, spaying and neutering programs, and providing resources and support to animal shelters and professionals.

how can i help?

Depending on your skills, resources, and availability – there are plenty of ways you can help your local animal shelter!

  1.  Volunteer: Volunteer your time! Many animal shelters rely on volunteers to help with various tasks such as cleaning, socializing animals, walking dogs, and assisting with events such as shelter adoptions.

  2.  Donate: Animal shelters always need supplies such as food, comfortable bedding, toys, and cleaning supplies for all animals. Check your shelter’s website for a shelter wish list, or donate what you can!

  3. Foster: Not every shelter has enough space to accommodate all the animals in need. Fostering an animal can help reduce overcrowding and provide a temporary home for an animal in need!

  4. Adopt an animal: #ADOPTDON’TSHOP! If you’re looking for a new pet, consider adopting it from your local animal shelter! Not only will you be providing a home for an animal in need, but you’ll also be helping the shelter make room for more animals that need a home in your community.

  5. Advocate & educate: Use your voice to speak up for animal welfare issues in your community as much as you can. Follow organizations that work on the betterment of animal welfare. Provide resources about current animal legislation (visit our friends over at Texas Humane Legislation Network to get you started), speak with your local representatives to urge them to support animal-friendly legislation, and advocate the importance of spaying and neutering pets to stop overpopulation!

Thank you shelter partners!
