May 2024 – Denton County Response

May 2024 - Denton County

Denton County – In late May, severe weather conditions impacted several counties throughout North Texas. We were requested to deploy our team and resources to the disaster zone that received severe damage and destruction in Denton County.

We assisted the All American Dogs Shelter with animals impacted by the tornadoes that tore through North Texas.

Our initial mission was to help the animals displaced from the storm and help them be reunited with their families, but soon after our arrival, we ran into another issue. Due to the continued storms, one of All American Dogs’ buildings flooded, which dramatically changed the course of our response in an instant.

The storm flooded a section of the already full  shelter, some animals were standing in 4-6 inches of water and needed a safe space immediately. Thankfully, our team was already on site to help address the emergent situation and turned our attention towards the affected buildings and animals.

The shelter was already over capacity prior to the storms, so the plan then became to transport animals that had already been at the shelter before the storm out of state to give them a better chance at finding their forever homes. This also made room for the animals affected by the storms and allowed the shelter to continue to assist the devastated area.

Our medical team worked long hours to get over 100 animals vetted so they could be eligible for transport out of state. Each animal was given a thorough exam, vaccinations, heartworm tests, and their health certificates. The process leading up to transport day can take anywhere from days to weeks, and we remained on site until every animal was ready for their journey and on the road to their new beginnings!

Because of our partnership with the ASPCA, we were able to evacuate over 50 dogs and 50 cats to an emergency facility where they could then begin to receive care for a brighter future.

Evacuating the animals from the affected areas and freeing up space in the shelter allowed the shelter to house the storm animals for a longer time to ensure better chances of reunification with their families.

We are only able to continue the work we do through your generous contributions. Your donations help us ensure these animals are receiving the care and love they need to eventually find a permanent home.
